First Aid at Work Health & Safety Guidelines (2013)

Here are the following guidelines for the number and qualifications necessary for various workplace environments. For first aid at work purposes they are divided under two categories, lower and higher risk environments.

Risk Category Number of Persons Employed No. Of First Aid Personnel Required
Lower Hazard e.g. shops, offices 1 – 24 At least 1 person who is appointed to recognise and deal with a first aid emergency. A one-day course is recommended.
25 – 50 At least 1 person who has been emergency first aid trained.
Higher Hazard e.g. engineering, kitchens, building sites 1 – 4 1 person who is appointed to recognise and deal with a first aid emergency. A one-day course is recommended.
5 – 100+ At least 1 person who has been ‘first aid at work’ trained for every 50 employed. This is a 3 day course.
